Welcome to “Why – and What – Should We Read?”

This site’s primary function is to support a course, with that question as its title, at Shimer College in Chicago, Illinois. The course and site have both been made possible through a generous grant under the “Enduring Questions” program of the National Endowment of the Humanities. The aims of website specifically with reference to the course can be found here.

Under the heading “Reading Art,” this site also includes material originally produced for “Great Books, Great Art”, a curriculum development project at Shimer College also supported by the NEH. You can read more about that project here.

In its entirety, the site’s larger purpose is to provide background on the history and material culture underlying the curriculum of materials studied at Shimer College. Like that curriculum, the site is ultimately dedicated to those, like me, with an interest in the past and future of reading.

Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this website do not necessarily reflect those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
